The USC women’s golf team will compete in Indiana from May 6 to 8 in an attempt to qualify for its 13th consecutive NCAA championship appearance. The team must place in the top eight at the NCAA Championships Central Regional at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbia, Ind., in order to advance. In the last four years, the No. 4 Women of Troy have had three victories and a third place finish at their regional competition, and they look to continue that streak of success this year.Leader · Sophomore Jennifer Song’s amateur career is coming to a close as the Women of Troy attempt to qualify for the NCAA championships. – Photo courtesy of USC Sports Information Leading the team is sophomore Jennifer Song, the No. 2 golfer in the country, who was named to the All-Pac-10 first team last week. Song finished third at last week’s Pac-10 championship and is looking to close her college career with a national championship. Song plans to turn pro after the season. She is on pace to break her own USC record for single season scoring average, shooting more than half a stroke better than she did as a freshman, and she already holds the USC record for most career rounds in the 60s, with 14. Song has six top-10 finishes in seven tournaments this year, as well as two victories. She said she thinks that she is in good shape to compete this week.“Putting and short game-wise, I’ve never been better,” Song said.Junior Lizette Salas, who was also named to the All-Pac-10 first team, has had four top-six finishes this season. Salas, the No. 16 golfer in the country, is looking for her second victory of the season this week on the way to the national championship.Senior Belen Mozo, who was named to the Pac-10 honorable mention team, is competing in her fourth and final NCAA regional tournament. Having been a part of two previous regional victories and last season’s third place finish, Mozo is well aware of the pressure on the team but thinks the team is ready.“We need these ups and downs, and last week’s [ fourth place] finish at the Pac-10 championships was definitely a down, because then we practice things we don’t when we win” Mozo said.Freshman Cyna Rodriguez is competing in her first regional tournament. She was also named to the honorable mention All-Pac-10 team in her first season at USC, and looks to continue contributing throughout the remainder of the postseason, having had her best finish of the season at the Pac-10 championships.Rounding out the Women of Troy’s roster this week is sophomore Inah Park. Though she has not competed since the Bruin Wave Invitational in early March, she earned the roster spot over seniors Caroline Kim and Stefanie Endstrasser through competitions in practice.Though the Women of Troy have to travel to their regional, they’ll be hitting familiar competition. Joining USC in Indiana is No. 2 Arizona State, whom the Women of Troy have battled all year, No. 7 Purdue, No. 13 Michigan State, No. 14 Georgia and No. 16 Denver.“I think it’ll be a good regional,” said USC coach Andrea Gaston. “The second tier of teams there is strong.”With a top-eight finish out of 24, the Women of Troy will advance to the NCAA national championship tournament, held at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., for the chance to compete for their third national title in a decade.

(Visited 10 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 If a report on EurekAlert is right, some evolutionary biologists used lack of evidence for natural selection as confirmation for evolution. They predicted guppies would show no evidence of a “grandmother effect” on life history after reproduction, and “that is what they found.” The question under study is why evolution keeps aging individuals living if it’s only reproductive fitness that matters in keeping a species going. Perhaps the aging are worth keeping around if they contribute to the fitness of the offspring (see 07/23/2003 entry). After admitting that the “granny effect” is not found in many mammals, even among sociable groups, the article said:Since guppies are livebearers that provide no postnatal maternal care, Reznick et al. predicted the populations would show no differences in postreproductive lifespan–which is what they found. Though overall lifespan varied among the populations, these variations stemmed from differences in time allotted only to reproduction. Postreproductive lifespan, in contrast, showed no signs of being under selection, and appeared to be what the authors called a “random add-on at the end of the life history.” Random or not, this is the first demonstration of a postreproductive lifespan in fish. (Emphasis added in all quotes.)The article then stated that whether postreproductive lifespan can be under selection at all is an open question. But then, it said that this new study helps gain an evolutionary perspective on such matters – including how they relate to humans. What kind of reasoning says, “we predict there will be no evolutionary natural selection” on a process, then uses the confirmation of the prediction as evidence for evolution? You can’t have it both ways. The article stated an evolutionary principle: “For natural selection to shape the twilight years, postreproductive females should contribute to the fitness of their offspring or relatives.” Notice that word should. If natural selection is the be-all and end-all of existence, and if nothing makes sense except in the light of evolution, and if most biologists expected there to be a granny effect, then Reznick’s study amounts to falsification. Grandparents everywhere should be relieved that another evolutionary principle has been falsified, because now their self-worth does not need to be tied to their tubes. You can’t bet at the racetrack that an aging Charlie Horse will win because it is more fit, then claim his loss also confirms your prediction. Charlie Horse is not just a loser; he’s a pain in the arm of science. Charlie’s hoarse cries for his theory to get to the finish line, or even past the starting gate, are increasingly falling on deaf ears among those who know how to spot winners and losers (see 09/26/2005, 08/15/2005 commentaries).
One living fossil and one dead fossil strain the credibility of evolutionary dates and mechanisms.Cuttlefish melanin: PhysOrg reported on intact melanin from the ink sac of a Jurassic-era cuttlefish (see also 8/20/02, 5/21/12) . The spectrum of the melanin matches that from a living specimen. The article did not question why an organic substance would be expected to survive for 160 million years. It just assumed that it did, and launched into a speculation: “Because melanin survives so long, an analysis of the melanin from old cancerous tissue samples could give researchers a useful tool for predicting the spread of melanoma skin cancer in humans.”Israeli frog: The Hula painted frog (no, it does not use a Hula-Hoop), feared extinct 60 years ago, has been rediscovered in Israel, reported the BBC News and National Geographic. Thought to be a casualty of the draining of wetlands in the Hula Valley in northern Israel, this strange-looking brown amphibian with white spots on its belly caused a stir of excitement when a frog, a kind of “idol of Israel” was found alive two years ago. Thirteen more have since been seen, leading to estimates of a couple of hundred remaining alive. That’s good news, but not the only point of interest: it’s also a “living fossil.” According to the evolutionary timeline, members of the Latonia group of frogs didn’t learn to keep evolving. National Geographic commented, “the Hula painted frog is considered a rare example of a so-called living fossil, an organism that has retained the same form over millions of years and that has few or no living relatives.” The BBC article said, “These frogs were once widespread throughout Europe for millions of years, but all apart from the Hula painted frog died out about 15,000 years ago.” That would appear to make this frog a member of “Lazarus taxa,” groups thought extinct long ago only to be found alive and well today.National Geographic erred by claiming that “Only about a dozen other ‘living fossils’ are known, the most famous of which may be the coelacanth, an ancient fish that can trace its ancestry back to the days of the dinosaurs.” As explained on CMI, Dr. Carl Werner has documented hundreds of them. Not only that, Dr. Werner has documented 432 mammal fossils (100 of them complete skeletons) in Cretaceous strata—almost as many species as dinosaurs. He has also found representatives of modern plants, crustaceans and insects in dinosaur rocks, as his video explains. Yet in 60 museums he visited, not a single one displayed a complete Cretaceous mammal fossil, or any modern animal or plant displayed with the dinosaurs. We agree with what Dr. Werner said in the CMI article:For example, if a scientist believes in evolution and sees fossils that look like modern organisms at the dinosaur digs, he/she might invent an hypothesis to ‘explain’ living fossils this way: ‘Yes I believe that animals have changed greatly over time (evolution), but some animals and plants were so well adapted to the environment that they did not need to change. So I am not bothered at all by living fossils.’ This added hypothesis says that some animals did not evolve. But if a theory can be so flexible, adding hypotheses that predict the opposite of your main theory, one could never disprove the theory. The theory then becomes unsinkable, and an unsinkable theory is not science. (Visited 36 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0

Content Marketing is not prospecting. Even if there is a call to action, you are not asking your client for a meeting to explore change. This is the above the funnel work that helps you create awareness and capture mindshare, both of which are helpful to your prospecting efforts.Social Selling is also not prospecting. It can create an awareness, mindshare, and it can potentially make prospecting easier because of the familiarity it creates. Because it lacks the request for a meeting, it isn’t prospecting. It’s another above the funnel activity.Nurturing your dream clients with insights and ideas, something I believe to be critical to sales now, is also not prospecting. When you provide value without making an ask, you are not actually prospecting. You might be tilling the soil and planting seeds, but without the ask, it’s not prospecting.Because of all these things can—and sometimes do—create an inbound opportunity (an outcome worth pursuing) they are confused with prospecting. But because there is no ask for a meeting explore change, it’s not prospecting. If you call these things prospecting, then you must measure the results in the same way that you would measure them using traditional forms of prospecting. If you make twenty calls and schedule one appointment, you have a 5 percent effectiveness from this method of prospecting. If you publish a blog post with a call to action that is viewed 2,800 times and results in no new opportunities, you have a 0 percent effectiveness rating from that method. This is true even if you ask the person viewing the blog post to download a piece of content and they provide you with their phone number and email address without agreeing to a meeting to explore change. While the blog post might generate excellent leads, you still have to prospect to create an opportunity.Just like it’s not the first phone call that generates a meeting, it’s not the first blog post either. If what you are doing doesn’t have people beating a path to your door, it’s not enough for you to give up outbound prospecting. As you think about your approach to opportunity creation, it’s important to understand the goals and outcomes of the activities you engage in. Above the funnel, passive activities that can occasionally produce opportunities isn’t prospecting. Prospecting is the proactive outreach that moves prospects into your funnel. Believing that your content marketing is going to generate enough opportunities to fill your pipeline is foolish and expects too much of an above the funnel activity. Get the Free eBook!
