Dodgers call late audible, move Kiké Hernández to left, Joc Pederson to DH for Game 3 Photos: Dodgers vs. Astros in World Series Game 3 from Houston There are those who have been waiting for Darvish to fail with the pressure on, but it had not happened yet. He started the NL Division Series clincher at Arizona and he started Game 3 in Chicago, with the Dodgers going for a 3-0 NLCS lead, and he won both games and allowed a .195 batting average.Related Articles And Darvish had enjoyed his time as a Texas pitcher against Houston. Overall he was 3-2 against Houston with a 2.38 ERA, and he had held the Astros to a .217 average. But the skeptics were vindicated in this Game 3, especially when Darvish could not escape Inning 2.Darvish was not brought to the Dodgers to get through two rounds of the playoffs and merely participate in the World Series. He was supposed to be the 212nd degree in this pot. But here he faced 12 Houston hitters and let five of them get extra-base hits, beginning with Yuli Gurriel’s blistering home run into the left-field box.He got two outs in the second inning and both of them were scalded, a line drive to center fielder Chris Taylor and another to second baseman Logan Forsythe. His pitches weren’t sinking and his mistakes were sternum-high and the Astros tend to get into a feeding frenzy when they sense a pitcher’s weakness. Kenta Maeda came in and admirably calmed the waters for 2-2/3 innings. The former starting pitcher allowed only one hit, and that was a bloop by Brian McCann that fell in with the Dodgers shifted elsewhere.Dave Roberts stretched Maeda before he went to the bullpen for lefty Tony Watson, who gave up a single to Josh Reddick and then threw away a dribbler by Evan Gattis. That allowed Reddicto score all the way from first for a 5-1 Houston lead. The Dodgers were facing Lance McCullers Jr., the man who shut down the Yankees with relief curveballs in Houston’s Game 7 victory on Saturday. They had a few chances, even after the Astros’ four-spot in the second. McCullers began the third inning with consecutive walks to Joc Pederson, Kiké Hernandez and Taylor. Corey Seager hit a hard bouncer that first baseman Gurriel fielded adroitly, and Carlos Correa brilliantly turned the double play as Pederson scored. In the Dodgers’ fourth, they had another chance when Yasiel Puig rammed a drive down the left-field line. The ball bounced off a half-wall and went right to Correa, who had run from shortstop.Puig had run through first base and was beginning to decelerate when he saw what happened. He restarted and dug hard for a double. His decision was a split-second late, as Correa threw him out at second. Then Pederson doubled with one out in the fifth and went nowhere. At that point the Dodgers were 1 for 12 with men in scoring position for the World Series. The Dodgers got rid of McCullers in the sixth inning after Turner doubled Seager to third base. But before he left, McCullers struck out Bellinger for the third time in the game. A ground out and Brad Peacock’s wild pitch brought L.A. to within 5-3.The loss brings lefty Alex Wood into the spotlight. Although he didn’t pitch badly, he took the Dodgers’ first loss of the postseason, during Game 4 at Chicago. Those 4-2/3 innings were Wood’s only pitches thrown competitively since Sept. 26.The Astros had a .472 slugging percentage at home during the regular season and averaged 4.87 runs at Minute Maid Park, and they are unbeaten here in the playoffs. The Dodgers, with their 112 wins just a historical marker, need to win one of the next two to return the Series to Dodger Stadium, where the systems seemed so protected, not that long ago. HOUSTON — The collaborative nature of the Dodgers held up Friday night, even in freefall. One system after another failed during their 5-3 loss to Houston in Game 3 of the World Series. Now they trail in a series for the first time in this postseason.“If we play normal Dodger baseball we win that game,” Cody Bellinger said. “It was still close even though we played a not-great game. So that’s a positive.”Yu Darvish put forth a non-competitive effort. Yasiel Puig came up with a unique way to extinguish a rally. A bases-loaded, no-out situation brought forth no hits and only one run. Defense broke down as well, and Bellinger, whose power put the Dodgers’ offense into an unexpected orbit almost from the moment he came up in April, saw his postseason troubles deepen.
