The lives of close to 400 pets from Los Angeles shelters and rescues were saved during the NKLA Adoption Weekend held at La Brea Tar Pits this past Saturday and Sunday.Charlotte Ross At NKLA Adoption EventCredit/Copyright: BestFriends.orgCherry, a one year old terrier Mix from Baldwin Park Shelter, was one of the first pets adopted over the weekend. “I wanted a small dog this age and literally 20 feet into the event, there she was,” said John Sherburn of Carson. “With hundreds of dogs at shelters, there’s no reason to buy a dog. It just doesn’t make sense. These are all good dogs.”NKLA Adoption – Fall 2013 – Miguel Ferrer poses with a fanCredit/Copyright: BestFriends.orgThe popular event was hosted by Best Friends Animal Society and featured more than 40 rescue groups and shelters supporting NKLA (No-Kill Los Angeles), an initiative led by Best Friends Animal Society with a mission of turning L.A. into a No-Kill City by 2017. The NKLA Adoption Weekend is one of several Best Friends “Super Adoption” events held nationally throughout the year, with dozens of animal welfare organizations and thousands of adoptable dogs and cats participating in a festival-type atmosphere.NKLA Adoption – Fall 2013 – MobyCredit/Copyright: BestFriends.org“Watching shelter pets find a fantastic home is the best part of doing this work. It happens by the hundreds during the NKLA adoption weekend, so we all leave here exhausted but ecstatic,” said Marc Peralta, executive director of Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles and NKLA. “Adoption is a key component to ending the killing of shelter pets and it’s inspiring to see so many groups working together to turn LA into NKLA.”NKLA Fall Adoption 2013 – author Mieshelle NagelschneiderCredit/Copyright: BestFriends.orgPets at the NKLA Adoption Weekend came from a variety of local shelters and rescues, including LA Animal Services, Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in Mission Hills, LA County Animal Care & Control, Angel City Pit Bulls, Border Collies in Need, Caring Friends Cat Rescue, Hanging with Friends Animal Rescue, K9 Connection, Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats, Labs and Friends.org, Tails of the City Cats, Wags and Walks Rescue, and many more. Pets from both city and county shelters were available with adoption fees starting at $25 and all were spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped.A cheer went up in the crowd at the end of NKLA Adoption Weekend when it was announced that all Los Angeles City and County shelter trucks were returning empty, as every available shelter pet had either been adopted or rescued.“Los Angeles Animal Services staff and volunteers are thrilled that we placed so many dogs and cats in homes of their own,” said Brenda Barnette, general manager of LAAS. “A big thank you goes to Best Friends for all they do to help make a life-saving difference for Los Angeles animals and the people who love them.”Several animal-loving celebrity supporters of Best Friends Animal Society’s lifesaving work including Miguel Ferrer, Moby, Charlotte Ross, Maria Conchita Alonso, Maggie Q and author Mieshelle Nagelschneider entertained and volunteered at the free, family-friendly event, which also featured L.A.’s hottest food trucks and the latest pet-related products and services from sponsors PetSmart Charities, Natural Balance Pet Foods, Banfield Pet Hospital, Mammoth Pet, and Dog for Dog.“When I first heard about the NKLA mission, I thought it was a beautiful, but impossible dream. Right now more than 70 different NKLA coalition partners are working together to put a stop to the killing of dogs and cats in L.A. shelters, so that dream is becoming a reality,” said actor Miguel Ferrer (NCIS: Los Angeles and Robocop). “The NKLA Adoption event is a great way to be a part of things and hopefully meet a new family member.”Mieshelle Nagelschneider, pet behaviorist and author of The Cat Whisperer, was on hand for the entire weekend and thrilled to see so many felines find their forever families.“Many people don’t realize that shelter cats have a more difficult time of finding homes than dogs. The more cats and kittens get adopted at events like this or rescued through shelters, the closer we are to turning L.A. into NKLA,” Nagelschneider said.
Indeed, the Penn State streak may be the longest that is directly comparable to the current Huskies run. There doesn’t appear to be any official list of longest streaks across all sports, but the generally acknowledged record for a team winning streak is the Trinity College men’s squash team, which won 252 straight team meets from 1998 to 2012. Similarly, the University of Miami won 137 team tennis contests in 1957-64. But a team’s squash or tennis meet winning streak isn’t really the same as a game or match streak in a team sport, since each meet is a collection of smaller matches from an individual or pairs sport.Individual sports have generated streaks longer than UConn’s. Cael Sanderson of Iowa State won 159 straight matches to go 159-0 in his collegiate wrestling career (other wrestlers have won more in a row than UConn’s 109 as well). But comparing individual dominance to team dominance is suspect. And other acknowledged streaks can be even more dubious, because they come from lower divisions or carve out a subset of games played — like Mount Union winning 112 straight regular-season games in Division III football. In other words: Don’t miss Saturday’s game! The Huskies will be playing for a claim to the longest winning streak in collegiate team sports history. But things get harder from there. To win this tournament, there’s a good chance that UConn will have to beat three of the next four highest-ranked teams. Barring upsets, the Huskies would face Maryland in the Elite Eight, Baylor in the Final Four and either Notre Dame or South Carolina in the final. If the Huskies face the Irish, they’ll be matching up against the team with the second-longest current win streak in NCAA women’s basketball, 16 games.Check out our March Madness predictions. After the University of Connecticut Huskies won their 109th straight game Monday, their chances of winning the NCAA women’s basketball tournament and carrying that win streak into next season remain just about steady at 48 percent (down a tick from 49 percent after round one), according to FiveThirtyEight’s March Madness predictions.Up next for the Huskies is No. 4-seed UCLA, a team that was ranked 15th at the end of the season and that UConn hasn’t played since 2014. If UConn wins that game, it’ll have 110 straight wins, moving it clear of Penn State’s 109 consecutive wins in women’s volleyball in 2007-10 — acknowledged as one of the longest winning streaks in collegiate sports history. Both streaks are over twice as long as the next-longest streak by any other entity in their sport. Before Penn State’s mark, the longest win streak by any other team in Division I women’s volleyball was USC’s 52 games in 2002-04. The longest streak in NCAA women’s basketball by a team other than UConn was 54 games by Louisiana Tech in 1980-82. (For comparison, UCLA men’s basketball’s heralded 88-game win streak was only 28 games longer than the previous record-holder’s.) Of course, Geno Auriemma’s UConn squad also holds the second- and third-longest streaks in women’s NCAA basketball, as well as the fifth-longest, which ended one game before the current streak began.VIDEO: How the Villanova and Duke losses shook the bracket

The third victim was evaluated at the scene by emergency personnel and declined to be transported for hospital care. The two people who were in the vehicle were unhurt. The head of the city building department evaluated the multi-tenant structure that houses the restaurant at South Bay Plaza shopping center and determined that it would require no repairs beyond replacement of the shattered window, Hernandez said. Dan Cohen AUTHOR The Senate Armed Services Committee, including its six subcommittees and the full committee, will mark up the fiscal 2016 defense authorization bill next week. The Airland panel will mark up its portion of the annual policy bill next Monday, followed by the other five subcommittees on May 12. The Readiness and Management Support Subcommittee will be one of three panels that day to conduct its markup in an open session. The full committee will mark up the legislation behind closed doors beginning May 13 and plans to finish its business by the end of the week. The House Armed Services Committee finished its markup of the authorization bill last Thursday; that measure now is expected to go to the House floor later this month. On Monday, John McCain (R-Ariz.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, indicated his committee would follow the lead of the House and introduce a hybrid retirement system allowing troops who serve less than 20 years to earn benefits through a 401(k)-type plan. The change was one of the reforms recommended by the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission earlier this year.“Eighty-five percent of the people who join the military never get anything out of it, as far as retirement is concerned. Now 85 percent will,” McCain said, reported the Hill.
