Pioneer Saudi sportswoman Sarah al-Attar has already raced at the Olympics but now her campaign will become a marathon as she uses the Rio Games to break down barriers in the conservative kingdom Attar turned heads in the head-to-toe outfit she patched together with her mother to race in the 800 metres at the 2012 London Games where she was one of the first Saudi women Olympians This time Attar now 23 will take on the gruelling 42 kilometer (26 mile) marathon race in Rio where four Saudi women will take part The women and seven Saudi men arrived in Rio on Monday but were kept away from prying media Gender divisions are so sensitive that the Saudi Olympic Committee website did not name the women who will represent the country Along with Attar they are judoka Wujud Fahmi fencer Lubna al-Omair and 100m runner Cariman Abu al- Jadail None qualified directly for their competition but will take part with special invitations from the International Olympic Committee Attar has no regrets and no doubts about running in London and Rio “I was going for the women in Saudi Arabia for all the young girls to have someone in the Olympics representing them giving them a picture of something they could one day strive for” she said in a recent article for the Like The Wind runners’ magazine Attar finished last in her 800 metres heat in London more than half a minute behind her nearest rival She still got a standing ovation when she crossed the line The Californian with Saudi-US nationality has never run under three hours in four attempts on the Boston marathon but can no doubt expect a similar acclaim in Rio Taking part in sport is not easy for Saudi women and finding women to go to the London Olympics was a challenge Someone knew of the half-Saudi girl in California who liked running and so an invitation was made “My mom and I pieced together an outfit: a long-sleeve shirt full-length running tights and a head cover we found online” Attar told Marie-Claire magazine “I was proud to wear the uniform and liked that wearing the appropriate dress connected me to Saudi girls who want to run and have to be covered while they do it” Since London Attar has become a sponsored athlete training with elite women runners in Mammoth Lakes California Attar and her family have also noticed change in Saudi Arabia since the London Games Her father Amer Attar told the Washington Post how on a 2011 visit when his daughter wanted to go on a run he gave her a boyish “cap and warmup pants” and drove beside her Last year he saw men and women running together in Jeddah “I even saw a guy with his I think looked like his wife and they were holding hands and running together And she was wearing the abaya and she was covered up but they were actually running” Still the IOC has rejected a suggestion by a Saudi Arabian official the conservative kingdom could jointly host the Olympics with neighbouring Bahrain holding men’s and women’s events in separate states But Indian writing on Gandhi and Gandhism has also undergone tremendous change during this process From the almost mystical being of the during-Gandhi era to a historical being with human vulnerabilities File image of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Getty images Gandhian scholar Vashist Bhardwaj finds the works of RK Narayan critical for his exploration of Gandhi as subject "Known for his direct approach in handling his subjects in Gandhi’s case too Narayan has used his wit at its best to ‘demahatmise’ Gandhism For instance Gandhi is seen as an oblivious yet dominating character in ‘Waiting for Mahatma’ with eyes closed to what is around and busy playing the dynamics of ‘self’ In Narayan’s ‘The Vendor of Sweets’ too Jagan the protagonist comes across a hypocrite Gandhian symbolising Gandhi’s failure to reach the masses" Bhardwaj noted The post-1990s’ writings have seen greater concentration on Gandhian politics in writings on him If BR Nanda is all praise for Gandhi’s politics Sunil Khilnani is just the opposite Early foreign writings on Gandhi include the works of French writer Rolland Romain Danish writer Ellen Horrup American and English writers like George Orwell and Edmud Jones among others Romain in "The Man who Became One with the Universal Being" saw Gandhi as an ideal nationalist and called upon him to enlighten the youth of Europe Similarly Pearl S Buck warned: "Oh India dare to be worthy of your Gandhi" On the other hand George Orwell puts Gandhi to trial describing him as a "humble naked old saint sitting on a prayer mat attempting to shake the British Empire by utter spiritual power" Orwell refers to him as the "shrewd person beneath the saint" and asserts that his ideals of spirituality spinning wheel and vegetarianism had narcissist undertones However Orwell also recognises the praiseworthy elements in Gandhi and writes: "Even Gandhi’s worst enemies would admit that he was an interesting and unusual man who enriched the world simply by being alive" In poetry it is Herrymon Maurer’s reflections that have attracted most attention "During a second period of pause/Gandhi went on with his teaching/East and West looked at him/Followed him and yet misunderstood him" Maurer famously wrote to summarise Gandhi’s life To note the rising presence of Mahatma Gandhi in the world of words an extensive literary survey titled "Gandhi in Creative and Critical Imagination" was conducted in 2012 and published in the International Journal of Research in Social Sciences and Humanities by Sandhya Saxena vice-principal of Bikaner’s Jain Girls College "India in contemporary times is a stage set for Gandhi and Gandhigiri Mahatma Gandhi permeates fiction as well as non-fiction in Indian writings both in English and other languages Gandhi is redefined in ways that are quite contemporary Whereas in some cases there is an attempt to grapple with Gandhi and ultimately accommodate him in other instances nothing of Gandhism remains unchallenged Whatever be the case in creative writings there is a sense of strong involvement as the writers pen Gandhi and Gandhism" Saxena maintained At a time when a considerable part of Bapu’s presence is contrary to what he stood for —roads named after him serve as begging tracks for starving men women and children while his fabric and quotes are mere means to woo votes —it is perhaps in these pages of Gandhian literature that Bapu and his ideals are still alive By: Express News Service | Kolkata | Updated: August 9 2017 10:11 am The Committee is set to meet in Delhi on Wednesday Top News Cricket’s inclusion at the 2024 Olympics is an item on the agenda as also increased compensation for players in domestic cricket when the Committee of Administrators (CoA) and BCCI office-bearers meet in Delhi on Wednesday Other major issues to be discussed are: managers for the India U-19 and India ‘A’ teams list of commentators (for the upcoming home season) IPL 2018 representation made by Mohammad Azharuddin (for his pending dues) and the Affiliation Committee’s report on Mizoram Cricket at Olympics During its meeting on July 22 the CoA discussed the Olympics participation issue eventually deciding that the BCCI members should vote on it The committee felt that as it’s a “long-term policy decision” it was best left to the members to take a call on why they had opposed it earlier and if they are willing to accept it now The CoA however has “encouraged” the BCCI to take a decision without “too much delay” According to a BCCI official however the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) whereabouts clause could be a major bone of contention If cricket becomes an Olympic sport the cricket board will have to sign it forcing the players to undergo ‘out-of-competition targeted doping tests’ and ‘blood tests’ Indian cricketers have long been vehemently opposing blood testing because they feel the WADA whereabouts clause violates their right to privacy If the BCCI has to decide in favour of cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics it might have to get a nod of approval from Virat Kohli & Co One BCCI official also spoke about the “contradiction” between the Olympic Charter and the Lodha Committee recommendations “To participate in the Olympics the BCCI will have to sign the Olympic Charter and accept its rules and by-laws The Olympic Charter doesn’t have an age cap of 70 years for office-bearers The Lodha Committee recommendation doesn’t allow it So there’s a contradiction” he said The ICC meanwhile is waiting for BCCI’s decision “We haven’t discussed it yet in detail at the ICC level because the BCCI has taken time to come back after discussing it with their members It would be taken up only after the BCCI comes back” ICC chairman Shashank Manohar had said speaking to The Indian Express a few days ago Increased compensation Earlier this year Harbhajan Singh wrote a letter to then India coach Anil Kumble pointing out “constant struggle” around him “in the financial situation” of his first-class team mates Domestic cricketers get just over Rs 1 lakh for a first-class game Kumble’s presentation to the CoA that came on the heels of Harbhajan’s letter however excluded domestic cricket But the cricket board has started working on a better compensation package for domestic cricketers although according to a BCCI functionary nothing has been finalised yet – whether fixed contracts will be introduced percentage of hike etc U-19 and ‘A’ team managers This is likely to follow the senior team structure that now has Sunil Subramanian as its administrative manager with a one-year contract With the CoA keen on professionalising the whole set-up the India U-19 and India ‘A’ managers will get professional contracts via advertisements and interviews Incidentally the CoA didn’t like the way former Jharkhand State Cricket Association secretary Rajesh Verma was appointed manager for the India U-19 team to England The 2018 IPL season It remains to be seen what is going to be discussed under this item Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are back in the fold after suspension and the BCCI is pretty keen on keeping the IPL an eight-team event According to a cricket board functionary it’s not clear what would be deliberated upon on Wednesday “The agenda has been set out but the items were not explained” he said For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Top NewsWritten by Sandeep Ashar | Mumbai | Published: June 15 2017 1:49 am Mungantiwar says the photograph is a gift
