coaches will run on the tracks — and under them as well Top News Caterpillar Trains an idea meant to take the train system to residential areas has just won an Indian Railways engineer a global competition on innovations at Boston’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Ashwani Kumar Upadhyaya 43 a 1997-batch officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service will now present his idea to academicians and town planners at a global conference in MIT in September In a nutshell the Caterpillar Train or C-Train envisages a citywide network of lightweight elevated train coaches running at about 100 kmph on a track supported by poles bent into arches The idea which won in both the popular choice and the judges’ choice categories was picked over 500 entries from across the world at the Climate CoLab contest “The strength of the concept is its simplicity and its practicability Some ideas are very good on paper but not practicable I guess we won because ours was both” Upadhyaya told The Indian Express Posted at the Centre for Railway Information Systems in New Delhi Upadhyaya has been developing the idea for the last few years as a PhD scholar in MIT while on study leave Instead of large coaches the C-Train envisages a series of small seating-only cars that would be “as high as an SUV” and capable of accommodating 20 passengers at a time The coaches would have wheels both below and on top so they can travel on the track and under it — giving it the appearance of a caterpillar Unlike the conventional metro system which relies on heavy pillars and corridors the C-Train would run on poles joined together to form an arch The system would run on electricity with each car equipped with a battery in case of emergencies The traction mechanism is such that both acceleration and deceleration are fast Since coaches are smaller and lightweight and the poles require little land the system is capable of penetrating residential areas Upadhyaya said Plus it should cost a fifteenth of a conventional metro system Each passenger will be able to choose his destination station by clicking on a console in front he said “Currently all urban mass transit systems are developed on the hub-and-spoke concept — the transport system is the hub and users have to travel from various parts of the city and converge there to use it But the C-Train goes wherever there is at least a five-metre road” he said Since coaches are seating-only the load in each car would be limited The stations he said would be designed as simple platforms accessible by elevators The plan is to stack coaches on top of each other so that less land is required as compared to bus or metro depots The “vertical depot” concept he said is a first for any urban transport system The idea has been dubbed the ‘internet of urban transport’ because of the fact that it could bring a mass-transit train system within a kilometre of residential areas Upadhyaya said he and his collaborator fellow PHD scholar at MIT Emil Jacob a Romanian-American had to make several presentations and answer some tough questions before their idea was selected “A robust system at such a low cost with a hardened glass body for coaches etc… obviously there were many doubts raised about technical feasibility as well There were even questions like ‘What if strong winds blow the cars away from the rails’” he said “But I guess we were able to satisfy all eventually” “Let’s hope the idea does not stay only on paper and we can build at least a prototype somewhere in the world The next chapter will come after that” he said The contest was organised by MIT’s Centre for Collective Intelligence which aims to offer a crowd-sourcing platform where people work with experts to create analyse and select detailed proposals the devastating floods marooned Kashmir the government has finally started dredging of river Jehlum to prevent floods in future J&K government has awarded Rs 399 crore dredging project to a Kolkata based company which made the lowest bid “The work on the project would start soon The (dredging) project would help to increase the carrying capacity of Jehlum and its flood spill channel” Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Javed Jaffer told The Indian Express “It is a Rs 399 crore project Out of 399 crores 140 cores have been set for land acquisition for the existing flood channel Rs 40 crore for building two bridges while the rest of the project cost would be spent on dredging and related works” The project named ‘Comprehensive flood management programme’ is undertaken by Kolkata based ‘Reach Dredging Limited’ The project is commissioned with the assistance from the centre “The project would be funded by centre on 70:30 basis The central government would provide 70 percent funding while state government would chip in with 30 percent” Jaffer said The officials say that while the dredging of river from Srinagar to Wular Lake would be completed within a year the de-siltation of the flood channel from Srinagar to Panzinara village in north Kashmir would take close to two years Once completed the dredging would increase the carrying capacity of river Jehlum and its flood spill channel by 10000 cusecs “At present the carrying capacity of Jehlum is around 27000 cusecs while that of the flood channel is around 8000 cusecs” said Chief Engineer Jaffer “After the dredging and de-siltation is completed the total capacity of the river and spill channel would increase to 45000 cusecs” The ‘Reach Dredging Limited’ has to extract 16 lakh cubic meters of silt from Jehlum and its spill channel while the department says that it has already dredged-out five lakh cubic meters of soil “The soil extracted from the river bed and that of spill channel would be sold by the dredging company” said Jaffer “In return they would have to pay rupees 12 crores to the department” Even when the dredging process would be completed it wouldn’t rule out flooding of Srinagar city in case of heavy rains lasting for several days For the proper flood management the department has already submitted a proposal of Rs 2000 crores to centre to create an alternate flood spill channel and the consequences last into adulthood according to a recent research conducted at Purdue University Top News Drinking highly caffeinated alcoholic beverages trigger changes in the adolescent brain similar to taking cocaine and the consequences last into adulthood according to a recent research conducted at Purdue University Lead researcher Richard van Rijn looked at the effects of highly caffeinated energy drinks and highly caffeinated alcohol in adolescent mice These alcohol studies cannot be performed in adolescent humans but changes seen in mouse brains with drugs of abuse have been shown to correlate to those in humans in many drug studies These energy drinks can contain as much as 10 times the caffeine as soda and are often marketed to adolescents But little is known about the health effects of the drinks especially when consumed with alcohol during adolescence Watch What Else Is Making News The study showed adolescent mice given high-caffeine energy drinks were not more likely than a control group to drink more alcohol as adults But when those high levels of caffeine were mixed with alcohol and given to adolescent mice they showed physical and neurochemical signs similar to mice given cocaine “It seems the two substances together push them over a limit that causes changes in their behavior and changes the neurochemistry in their brains” van Rijn said Adding “We’re clearly seeing effects of the combined drinks that we would not see if drinking one or the other” With repeated exposure to the caffeinated alcohol those adolescent mice became increasingly more active much like mice given cocaine The researchers also detected increased levels of the protein which is marker of long-term changes in neurochemistry elevated in those abusing drugs such as cocaine or morphine “That’s one reason why it’s so difficult for drug users to quit because of these lasting changes in the brain” van Rijn said Those same mice as adults showed a different preference or valuation of cocaine Robins found that mice exposed to caffeinated alcohol during adolescence were less sensitive to the pleasurable effects of cocaine While this sounds positive it could mean that such a mouse would use more cocaine to get the same feeling as a control mouse “Mice that had been exposed to alcohol and caffeine were somewhat numb to the rewarding effects of cocaine as adults” van Rijn said “Mice that were exposed to highly caffeinated alcoholic drinks later found cocaine wasn’t as pleasurable They may then use more cocaine to get the same effect” he added To test that theory Robins investigated if mice exposed to caffeinated alcohol during adolescence would consume higher amounts of a similarly pleasurable substance – saccharine an artificial sweetener They predicted that if the mice exhibited a numbed sense of reward they would consume more saccharine They found that the caffeine/alcohol-exposed mice drank significantly more saccharine than mice exposed to water during adolescence confirming that the caffeine/alcohol-exposed mice must have had a chemical change in the brain “Their brains have been changed in such a way that they are more likely to abuse natural or pleasurable substances as adults” van Rijn said The results were published in the journal PLOS ONE For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian
