ALAMEDA — The last time the Raiders put this many good players on the field, they won the AFC championship.Damning with faint praise? That’s a legitimate argument, considering there’s only been one winning season in the last 16 since confetti fell at the Coliseum following a 41-24 win over the Tennessee Titans at the Coliseum following the 2002 season. The Raiders were 11-5, Rich Gannon was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player, three future Hall of Famers (Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, Rod Woodson) were …

When we first heard about inDegree, pitched to us as a LinkedIn for graduate students, our initial response was, “Yes, but don’t graduate students already have LinkedIn?”This startup’s CEO, Alexander Miningham, responded that while many grad students do indeed see some job hunting success via the behemoth site, many others have not yet built the professional networks to find a great deal of value there. As LinkedIn grows ever larger, more of us are relying on our networks for word-of-mouth, referrals, and recommendations. Miningham’s point stands; so what does inDegree propose to offer as a substitute for a large professional network?New users of the site are placed in what Miningham called “education networks,” which allow users to find and connect with classmates or alumni – who are arguably more useful in a job-search scenario. Users can share documents and work collaboratively through the site. Job listings on the site are for advanced degree-holders only, which creates a welcome bottleneck for jobseekers.“Through research,” wrote Miningham, “we’ve found that graduate students are looking for a more dedicated site that fits their specific needs. Coupled with the services we plan to offer in 2010, we are confident that graduate students and alumni will rapidly adopt the website. inDegree is also the first website that connects these 4 user groups in one centralized location (graduate students, alumni holding graduate degrees, employers, and universities).”InDegree launched in beta in May to Florida State University business students and launched publicly August 31. Currently, all accounts and postings are free of charge for all users, including universities and companies. In early 2010, inDegree plans to roll out matching services similar to the models established by eHarmony.com and Match.com. InDegree proposes to match grad students and alumni to open positions with consideration for job types, experience required, location, salary, specializations, licenses, and other criteria. At that point, the site will charge employers and universities for matches, although job-seeking grad students will still be able to use the site and find matches free. It’s an interesting concept, and one that will require plenty of user adoption to work effectively. And we get the impression that effective pitching to universities will be one of the most important ways to increase user adoption. The interface on the site needs work; it doesn’t have a professional look and feel, and the site’s features and benefits are not compellingly highlighted. Although these aspects need work, we can see the “matching” concept working well for grad students in the future. What do you think? Grad students and alums are especially encouraged to weigh in. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said that all talks on seat sharing or alliances in Bihar now were just speculations.“Sab hawa mein batein chal rahi hai abhi (everything is just speculations now),” said Nitish Kumar while addressing media persons on the sidelines of his weekly Lok Samvad (public interaction) programme in Patna.Mr. Kumar is scheduled to meet BJP president Amit Shah on July 12 in Patna. Party sources told The Hindu that both the leaders would mull over seat sharing formula in the state for upcoming Lok Sabha elections.“When asked would he contest the upcoming assembly elections in four state in alliance with BJP or some other parties?” Mr Kumar said, “JD(U) would contest on its own as every political party wants to expand its base…earlier too we’ve contest polls in other states and won seats.”“The alliance with the BJP is for Bihar only,” he said. He further asserted that the NDA government was working well in the state and there was no confusion between its alliance partners. While reacting on political controversy over his “courtesy call” to RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav to know his well-being when he was undergoing medical check-up in Mumbai, Nitish Kumar said, “Now I’ll get to know about his (Lalu Prasad) health through newspapers or media persons.”“But, the way my phone call to know about his health was projected was totally unbecoming…it was not moral…besides political differences we keep in touch with each other on personal level and participate in our sukh-dukh (happiness and sorrow),” he said while, adding that he had called “four times” to know about well-being of ailing Lalu Prasad. On the “No Entry – Nitish Chacha” placard displayed by Lalu Prasad’s elder son and RJD MLA Tej Pratap Yadav at the gate of his residence, Mr. Kumar said, “It was laughable.”“When you do such things you don’t know about its impact on society at large..your party supporters may be happy but what about others?” said the Chief Minister.Mr. Kumar also reiterated that in the coming session of the Bihar Assembly, an amendment to the provisions of Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act 2016 would be brought.“The amendments will be basically on the feedback from interaction with general people and misuse of the provisions of the law by police and excise department officials…but, the liquor law will continue to be more effective in the state,” he said.
Today, February 14th, men, women and children around the world are coming together to demand and end to violence against women and girls.Internationally acclaimed and award winning singer, songwriter and actor P!nk, along with her dancers and crew, are among the one billion rising for justice.Video: Pink and crew dance for 1 Billion Rising for JusticeONE BILLION RISING FOR JUSTICE is a global call to women survivors of violence and those who love them to gather safely in community outside places where they are entitled to justice – courthouses, police stations, government offices, school administration buildings, work places, sites of environmental injustice, military courts, embassies, places of worship, homes, or simply public gathering places where women deserve to feel safe but too often do not. It is a call to survivors to break the silence and release their stories – politically, spiritually, outrageously – through art, dance, marches, ritual, song, spoken word, testimonies and whatever way feels right.“I have never liked bullies of any kind,” said Pink. “Whether it’s someone picking on the “fat” kid, the “retarded” kid, the “short” kid, the “black” kid, the “Asian” kid, the “gay” kid, the “girl”, cause she “hits like a girl” or is the “weaker sex”…You name it. Different “reasons”, same “bully”. The bully is the problem. The bully needs a hug, a lesson, enlightenment. The bully is the one that really feels inferior, so he/she picks on someone else to make that person feel inferior too.“When I read about this organization, how people get together of their own free will and dance, use their bodies, to express their rage- outrage- around the injustice that women feel all over the world, every day- I was inspired. I am a woman. I know women. I have sisters, strong and less strong, small and less small, Asian and black, gay and straight, Indian and Native American… We are all equally deserving of respect and personal space. I will fight for that right for all of us. And we come together to do so on our stage, with our brothers and menfolk- where we express our freedom every night. And that freedom inspires others to be free. We hope this video helps. And we hope for that one day when all women and girls are able to have respect, and personal space, and to be able to express themselves in whatever way THEY feel is right for them.”Join the movement, and watch it live here.
DoSomething.org, the largest organization for young people and social change, and Disney | ABC Television Group have teamed up for National Foster Care Awareness Month through a campaign called “School Insider.”Young people in foster care often have to switch schools — in one study, young adults reported switching an average of eight times. Switching schools can be stressful for students and may lead to feelings of low self-esteem.Through the campaign School Insider, young people across the country will make new students feel welcome and accepted to help make the transition a bit easier. Participants will create school welcome sheets and volunteer to be a resource for students joining their school midway through the year. The campaign kicks off today and runs through May 31. Young people who sign up at dosomething.org/beinspired and upload a photo of their welcome packet will be eligible to win a $1,000 scholarship. Participants are also encouraged to wear blue to show support for kids in foster care in honor of Foster Care Awareness Month.“We’re thrilled to work with Disney | ABC Television Group on a campaign that will make a positive impact for youth in the foster care system,” said Naomi Hirabayashi, chief marketing officer at DoSomething.org. “With their reach and support, we’ll be able to activate even more young people around this important issue.”For more information, visit dosomething.org/beinspired.
