first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion I’m writing this letter in total support of the current form of Saratoga Springs government. It’s unbelievable to me that some people want to radically change what continues to be one of the most successful cities in New York state. They can write all the gobbledy-gook they want. No way will their proposed charter improve on the incredible success of this wonderful city. The risk they want us to take is way too high. This group ignores our citizens, who twice voted since 2006 against changing our government. This same group worked to have the vote one day after the Memorial Day holiday. There’s no doubt why they tried this trick.I have lived here for more than 40 years, and my wife was born and raised here. We both would be extremely disappointed if such a successful city faced an uncalled-for change, which makes absolutely no freaking sense. Finally, I think it would be a tragic and costly mistake to change our wonderfully successful form of government. As Commissioner Michele Madigan pointed out, their financial analysis is way off the rails. While no government is perfect, the current commission form is pretty darn close. Vote no on charter change.Michael O’BrienSaratoga SpringsMore from The Daily Gazette:Foss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?Schenectady, Saratoga casinos say reopening has gone well; revenue down 30%EDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristslast_img read more

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionAs a rabbi who served an Albany congregation for 16 years and who has been privileged to serve in the largest synagogue in Canada for almost a quarter-century, I was delighted to see that the Capital District is finally moving forward with plans for a Holocaust memorial. For the capital of a state with such a significant Jewish population, many of whom were Holocaust survivors or the descendants of survivors, this memorial is long overdue. Years ago, Bishop Howard Hubbard and Jewish leaders situated the sculpture Portal near the Cathedral to signify the importance of Jewish-Catholic reconciliation to the future of both religions. For Bishop Edward Scharfenberger to offer land for this undertaking is a remarkable gesture of friendship. Our experience in Toronto has been that thousands of students, of all religions and races, visit our memorial and the Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre. They come to the Beth Tzedec Museum to see artifacts from the Nazi concentration camps. The sites, programs and exhibits serve to inculcate in contemporary generations awareness of the dark horrors of history. Particularly at this time, when neo-Nazis marched with impunity in Charlottesville and Jewish institutions and individuals remain significant targets for hate, this type of memorial is essential. The Jewish community and Catholic Church are to be commended for advancing this project. Our area will be better for it.Baruch Frydman-Kohl (formerly of Albany)Toronto, CanadaMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?EDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristslast_img read more

Spend more money to secure our schools

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionAs we all know, a mass shooting at a school occurred again. What we hear is the same old drumbeat of banning some types of guns by the left vs. our Second Amendment rights by the right. If this debate continues, you can be sure nothing will be accomplished. What will work is to harden our schools like we do airports, ballparks, courthouses and other venues where large numbers of people gather. What is common to all of them is a limited point of entry, with metal detectors and guards. Our government buildings and the Smithsonian museums in our nation’s capital are secured in this manner with great success. We have 100,000 schools in our country, so it would be expensive to secure them all. But to do nothing at this point would be unacceptable. The good thing about this approach is that once the funding issues are resolved, the plan would sail through our legislative bodies.Ron BelliSchenectadyMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsSchenectady department heads: Budget cutbacks would further stress already-stretched departmentsEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationSchenectady High School senior class leaders look to salvage sense of normalcyMotorcyclist injured in Thursday afternoon Schenectady crashlast_img read more

first_imgThe writer is correct that those with lower income feel more of the pain of the gas tax. This is more an issue of income inequality to be dealt with in that context via tax rebates for lower-income drivers, for example. The writer is also correct that in the short run, drivers often can’t change their driving habits in response to the tax. In the longer run, however, drivers buy more fuel-efficient cars, live closer to work and make fewer one-store trips. In short, no one likes to pay taxes, but sometimes they are necessary. The trick isn’t to get rid of the tax, but to make it work the way it’s supposed to.Lester HadsellTroyThe writer is a professor of economics at RPI.More from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s press conference for Sunday, Oct. 18EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesCuomo calls for clarity on administering vaccine Categories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionGasoline tax has its positive benefitsRe May 27 Viewpoint, “Slash state gas tax,” author Steve Keller argues that the tax on gasoline should be abolished. He contends that economists view higher gas taxes negatively and instead advocates to lower them. The consensus among economists is, in fact, that higher gasoline taxes are warranted — as much as three times the current level. The economic rationale for gasoline taxes is based on the concept of negative externalities: the harm to the environment and human health done by burning gasoline. A gasoline tax discourages use of gasoline, just as intended. The result of the tax is less consumption, less pollution, better health, less congestion and fewer accidents. The tax is more effective than alternatives; one study shows that gasoline taxes are multiple times less expensive than fuel economy standards at achieving increased environmental quality.last_img read more
