This is an interesting development in the run-up to the World Congress on Information Technology, which will be held in Dubai in December.”To schedule an interview with Bronk, contact Jeff Falk, associate director of national media relations at Rice, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 713-348-6775.-30- Related materials: Bronk bio: http://bakerinstitute.org/personnel/fellows-scholars/cbronkFounded in 1993, the James A. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster) Share this article US Q&A: A Look at Trump’s Call to Cancel New Air Force One By The Associated Press December 6, 2016 Updated: December 6, 2016 WASHINGTON—President-elect Donald Trump suggested Tuesday that he would cancel Boeing’s contract to build a new fleet of presidential aircraft to replace the aging Reagan-era models that currently shuttle the president around the world. Trump cited “out of control” costs of more than $4 billion in a tweet that ended with “Cancel order!”Trump later told reporters the cost was “ridiculous” and that he wanted the aircraft maker to “make a lot of money, but not that much money.”Here’s a look at Trump’s claims about Air Force One, one of the most recognized airborne symbols of the American presidency. How Much Will The Project Cost? The Government Accountability Office, the government’s auditing arm, in March of this year estimated total program costs at more than $3.2 billion between the 2010 and 2020 federal budget years. Separately, Defense Department and Air Force officials say two new aircraft could cost at least $4 billion for development, construction and future maintenance, matching the figure Trump cited. The officials were not authorized to comment publicly about the sensitive military project and spoke on condition of anonymity. Why Does The Government Want New Planes? Doesn’t The Current Air Force One Work Just Fine? While that is true, the current aircraft that the president uses for the bulk of his foreign and domestic travel are getting older and breaking down more often, officials say. Two variants of a Boeing 747 are in rotation. The planes were built in the 1980s and began flying in the early 1990s. One took President Barack Obama on a trip to MacDill Air Force in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday.Air Force One, the distinctive blue-and-white plane with the U.S. flag on its tail and the presidential seal, is basically a flying office for the president, complete with sophisticated communications, military and other capabilities. Safety of the president is paramount, and the government started the process to replace the aging aircraft with younger versions that take advantage of the most-up-to-date advances in technology. It can be refueled in the air and, with an unlimited range, can take the president wherever he needs to go. Its electrical systems are hardened to protect against an electromagnetic pulse, and the plane has advanced secure communications equipment that will allow it to function as mobile command center in the event of an attack on the United States, according to the White House.Related CoverageTrump Says Cancel New Air Force One: Costs ‘Out of Control’The president and most of those who travel with him aboard Air Force One enjoy 4,000 square feet of floor space on three levels, including a suite for the president with an office and a conference room. A medical suite that can function as an operating room, in an emergency, and a doctor is always on board. The plane has quarters for those who regularly accompany the president on trips, including White House staff, Secret Service agents, traveling journalists and other guests. What Is Boeing’s Role In The Project? So far, the Air Force has spent about $170 million on three contracts to begin to identify the types of military and specialized systems that would have to be added a commercial aircraft the president would use. Boeing has that contract. It would also build the replacement Air Force One.Can Trump Cancel The Project?Yes, but not before he is sworn in to office on Jan. 20. Show Discussion
NEW YORK—For the better part of the 1990s, millions of Chinese gathered on a regular basis to do the slow-moving, meditative exercises of Falun Gong or studying the teachings of the spiritual practice’s founder, Mr. Li Hongzhi. An abundance of photography and literature documents the extensive spread of Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa.On May 13, a quarter century to the date that Mr. Li gave his first Falun Gong lecture in an austere Northeast Chinese classroom in 1992—and nearly 18 years since the beginning of a brutal communist persecution ordered by regime leaders—3,300 adherents hailing from multiple countries gathered in New York to form a set of words in celebration of the moment. At Gantry Park, on the eastern riverbank of the Hudson River in Queens, opposite the Manhattan skyline, 1,300 people mostly from nations across the Asia-Pacific region donned yellow clothing and sat down to meditate. The message formed by the event organizers, who had laid out and tested the crowd configurations in advance, read in Chinese and English, “25 Years of Spreading Dafa.”On Governors Island, 2,000 Falun Gong practitioners from North and South America formed a similar scene, with the Chinese characters reading “The Fa [Chinese for “Law”] Rectifies Heaven and Earth.” Falun Gong practitioners gathered on Governors Island, New York, form Chinese characters that read “The Fa Rectifies Heaven and Earth.” (Cao Jingzhe/The Epoch Times)Falun Dafa teaches spiritual cultivation according to the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. With a mind to Falun Gong’s ancient roots in Buddhist and Daoist traditions, practitioners follow these precepts in their day-to-day lives, striving to be better people. And a set of five meditation exercises keeps them healthy, as experienced by the 1999 estimates of 70 to 100 million Falun Gong practitioners at all levels of Chinese society and for hundreds of thousands of people who took up the practice overseas.Despite costly and bloody efforts by the communist regime to eradicate Falun Gong in mainland China and defame it around the world, tens of millions of people are estimated to continue the practice underground in China. Meanwhile, Falun Gong practitioners and groups can be found in about 100 countries on all inhabited continents.Decca Wirywan, an Indonesian practitioner working in Qatar, said he had benefited immensely from Falun Gong in terms of physical and mental health, and was excited to take part in the character formation, despite the presence of rain and strong wind on the day of the event.“Dafa helped me so much,” he said. “It’s my first time here and I am very eager to be a part of this.”Anita Hermawan, also from Indonesia, said she had very poor health and was reduced to taking dozens of pills a day before she learned about Falun Gong from her friend Wirywan.“After I started practicing Falun Dafa, everything went away,” Hermawan said of her symptoms. The thousands who took part in this year’s character formations are among over 10,000 Falun Gong practitioners who came to New York to participate in activities surrounding the May 13 anniversary, which is known as World Falun Dafa Day.Around 1,000 joined an arts event at Union Square on May 11; the next day, 10,000 people rallied at the Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza near the United Nations headquarters to protest the persecution in China and showcase Falun Gong’s worldwide reach. Six thousand five hundred practitioners, hailing from 57 nations and regions, marched in a parade to the Chinese Consulate on the other side of Manhattan. Jing Tang, a Falun Gong practitioner living in Texas, takes part in the 2017 character formation activity at Gantry Park. (Leo Timm/The Epoch Times)For Jian Tang, a Chinese-American practitioner living in Houston, the event was a reminder of how Falun Gong practitioners have thrived despite many years of persecution. Tang, a new practitioner when the persecution started in 1999, travelled back to China that November specifically to take part in an appeal to the communist regime in Guangdong Province.Tang and other practitioners were arrested. After spending 15 days in detention, Tang was fortunately released with the support of local U.S. media in Colorado, where she was residing with her daughter Shaoshao at the time.“The persecution, it’s just appalling,” said Dereck Siems, Shaoshao’s boyfriend. “These people are being thrown in jail and tortured just for doing meditation.” Share Share this article 1,300 falun Gong practitioners in Gantry Park, New York, form Chinese and English words saying “25 years of spreading Dafa” on May 13, 2017. (PAUL J. The cause of death was not immediately clear. As one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s, Domino sold 65 million records – more than anyone in that period except Elvis Presley, according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He had dozens of songs on the pop and rhythm-and-blues charts, including “Blueberry Hill,” “Ain’t That a Shame,” “Blue Monday,” “I’m Walkin’,” “Whole Lotta Loving,” “Hello, Josephine,” “Walking to New Orleans,” “I’m Gonna Be a Wheel Some Day” and “Let the Four Winds Blow.”“For lack of a better way of putting it, he’s a living, walking legend among us in New Orleans,” singer Irma Thomas told the New York Times in 2007. “Between him and Louis Armstrong, they were the first big names to put us on the musical map.”Antoine Dominique Domino was born on Feb. 26, 1928 in New Orleans and one of nine children. A brother-in-law taught him piano, leading to a style that mixed the classic New Orleans sound with blues, country and Cajun music. He was performing in nightclubs while still a teenager and soon teamed with trumpet player Dave Bartholomew, who would become his co-writer and producer and help refine his piano style.

(Reuters/ Kyle Grillot). US News Share Share this article WASHINGTON—The state of California on Oct. 26 agreed not to enforce its own state net neutrality law until a final court decision on the Trump administration’s decision to overturn the 2015 Obama-era open internet rules. The move likely means the California net neutrality law, which was set to take effect on Jan. 1, now will be on hold for a year or longer. The law has been challenged by the U.S. Justice Department and trade groups representing providers including AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., and Comcast Corp.A federal appeals court set oral arguments for Feb. 1 on the administration’s net neutrality reversal. California agreed it would not seek to enforce its law until that court’s decision and any potential review by the U.S. Supreme Court.A federal judge on Oct. 26 approved an agreement between California, the Justice Department, and the trade groups to delay implementation and the legal challenges to the state law.Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, who led the effort to overturn the Obama era net neutrality rules, said in a statement California’s “substantial concession reflects the strength of the case made by the United States earlier this month. It also demonstrates … there is no urgent problem that these regulations are needed to address.”California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said the decision was “intended to put us in the best position to preserve net neutrality for the 40 million people of our state. We are fighting the Trump Administration’s attempt to repeal net neutrality in the D.C. Circuit Court and we will vigorously defend California’s own net neutrality law.” In December, the FCC said in repealing the Obama-era rules that it was pre-empting states from setting their own rules governing internet access—an issue the federal appeals court is expected to address. The FCC order reversed rules barring internet service providers from blocking or throttling traffic or offering paid fast lanes, also known as paid prioritization. A group of 22 states and the District of Columbia have sued to overturn the repeal. The four trade associations that sued to block the law said California’s decision not to enforce the law “is a win for consumers that will allow continued innovation and investment while these deliberations continue.” The groups also filed suit last week against Vermont over a separate state net neutrality law.The Trump administration rules were a win for internet providers but opposed by companies such as Facebook Inc., Amazon.com Inc., and Alphabet Inc.The FCC handed sweeping powers to internet providers to recast how Americans use the internet—as long as they disclose any changes. The new rules took effect in June but major providers have made no changes in internet access.U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in September in a statement that the “the California legislature has enacted an extreme and illegal state law attempting to frustrate federal policy.”
